wow, talk about cutting it close. I read the Lord of the Rings to the kids, and that was by far our best read out loud. Harry Potter was second.
We have an 8-month old who goes to bed every night after reading "Mommy, Mama & Me". She grabs at it, gives it a good chew and then sucks on her sleep sack and nods off. Sweet life.

We've also just printed our own board book for her all about her family with our own pictures and story in it. She reads (squeals) it to herself and giggles at it. My head exploded the first time she did that.

We are huge fans of "No Matter What" by Debbi Gilori. It's a story about the love between large and small, neither of whom are gendered.

Mem Fox's "Where is the Green Sheep" is also very popular with the small boy.

Jack is 9 turning 10 in June. We decide 9 for Harry Potter...it was hard for me to wait that long. We read the book and then watch the movie. He seems okay with it so far but it does get darker as the series progresses.

Our weekend morning ritual is to snuggle in bed together and play made up games. The favourites include a wrestling game between dad and kiddo called "foot touch nose" (I excuse myself from this one), and the alphabet game, where the three of us take turns naming something from a category (often dragons or dinosaurs) for each letter of the alphabet. And our favourite books are too many to list! Our bookshelves overfloweth.

Well, my daughter is 13, so we no longer bond over Eric Carle, reading the Very Hungry Caterpillar over and over. However, we just read one of my all time favorite novels out loud together -- Kazuo Ishiguro's, Never Let Me Go.

This book is so beautiful and the end of this book is so heart wrenching, that when I started sobbing, unable to continue, my daughter took the book from me and finished reading for us.

I'll read anything to my kids, pretty much. We've gone through various phases on favourites, both classic kid stuff such as The Little Engine That Could (love it) and more modern stuff like Pinkalicious (not so much). The phase that I have found most difficult to manage -- ironic, considering that I'm an editor -- is when my daughter was insisting on having pages from her children's dictionaries read to her for night after night ...

My kids are too old to be read to but my grandkids still like to be read to. I bought two identical sets of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books so my granddaughter and I could read over the phone and each have our own copy to follow along.

Last time I was visiting my daughter she read Love You Forever to my grandson.

Such a touching book but you have NO idea until you hear your child read it to their child.

Our daughter is 4 months old, and she does already love being read to! Mommy, Mama and Me (Leslea Newman, of course) is her favorite, but she also likes Owen's Marshmallow Chick(Kevin Henkes) and Goodnight Moon & Runaway Bunny. We can't wait to read our other favorites to her, and we're finding new favorites all the time. I'm at home, working on being a WAHM, but Mama works outside of the house- I'm sure schedule recitation will soon be a part of our day. Mama's weekends are already our obvious favorite days. :)
